GLADNESS

When Samuel Johnson was born in 1709, there was some doubt that he would survive infancy, due to severe health challenges. He was scarred from tuberculosis, deaf in one ear, and blind in one eye, the results of being nursed by an infected nursemaid. Nevertheless, he was fiercely independent and driven to get along in life with as little assistance as possible. In his writings, he reveals a passion for life that is inspiring.

Sometimes it is possible to let setbacks rob us of our gladness. Take a moment to consider where you may have allowed yourself to lose your natural enjoyment of life due to challenges.

    It has been difficult lately for me to feel joy knowing how deeply others suffer. I know that if I feel joy it is not taking it away from someone else, but still…so so many of my brothers and sisters are in such pain, that I end up immersed in sadness. I know there is a way to have an open heart without living in this state, because I see others who can do this, but…
