Our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks.
When Samuel Johnson was born in 1709, there was some doubt that he would survive infancy, due to severe health challenges. He was scarred from tuberculosis, deaf in one ear, and blind in one eye, the results of being nursed by an infected nursemaid. Nevertheless, he was fiercely independent and driven to get along in life with as little assistance as possible. In his writings, he reveals a passion for life that is inspiring.
Sometimes it is possible to let setbacks rob us of our gladness. Take a moment to consider where you may have allowed yourself to lose your natural enjoyment of life due to challenges.
